An industrial shell transformed into a flexible civic room for performance and making.

Reading the constraints before drawing the form.

A listed industrial hall had generous volume but poor daylight, inaccessible circulation, and no environmental separation between performance, exhibition, and making spaces.

Architecture shaped by place, use, and longevity.

A freestanding timber and steel insert organizes the hall without touching the historic shell. New roof lanterns and a central civic stair bring light and orientation deep into the plan.

Material palette

A restrained palette with depth and permanence.

Existing brick, lime mortar, galvanized steel, birch plywood, recycled rubber, and translucent glass.

Measured outcome

Performance that can be felt and quantified.

The venue now supports exhibitions, performances, workshops, and community events with 62% less operational energy than the former building.
